In algebraic expressions mainly two terms are used i.e. is constants and variables. Constant is a fixed numeric value in algebraic expression, we cannot change it. Value of the variables can be changed. When we combine the variables and constants with some mathematical operations like addition, subtraction, multiplication, etc. algebraic expression formed.
Let us see how to arrange the algebraic expression in descending order:
Step 1: First we need an algebraic expression.
Step 2: Find the variable with largest power on that. We put that variable at first place in algebraic expression.
Step 3: Select the variable which has the second largest power on it. Place it at second Position in the expression.
Step 4: Continue this process till we get last variable of algebraic expression.
Step 5: Now there is no variable left in the expression. Put the constant at very last position in the algebraic expression.
Let us take an example to better understand this process. Assume we have an algebraic expression 2x5 + 3x3 – 4x4 + 8. Now we have to arrange this algebraic expression in descending order. So we will select the variable with largest power 2x5, then 4x4 and so on. So algebraic expression in descending order will be:
2x5 – 4x4 + 3x3 + 8.
