# Operations with Whole Numbers and Fractions

TopFractions are the Numbers written in form of p/q , where p and q are positive integers and q <> 0. On another hand, whole numbers are the numbers used for measurement, so they start form 0 , 1, 2, 3 ........ and goes up to infinite.
Now let’s look at the operations with whole numbers and Fractions:
All mathematical operations namely addition, subtraction, multiplication and division are possible with whole numbers and the fractions.
We first take addition of a Whole Number with a fraction
Say
Now 4 can be written as 4/1 so
4/1 + 3/5
LCM of 1 and5 is 5
So it becomes
20/5 + 3/5 (by multiplying & dividing 4 / 1 by 5 )
= ( 20 + 3 ) / 5
= 23 / 5.
Similarly subtraction of a whole number and a fraction can also be performed

Solve: 3 - ( 3/5 )
Now 3 can be written as 3/1 so
3/1 - 3/5
l cm of 1 and 5 is 5
so it becomes
15/5 - 3/5 (by multiplying & dividing 4 / 1 by 5 )
= ( 15- 3 ) / 5
= 12 / 5.

To multiply, we proceed as:
(7 / 6) * 8
It can be written as
(7 / 6) * (8/1)
Here we multiply numerator with the numerator and the denominator with the denominator, we get
= (7 * 8) /(6 * 1)
= 56 / 6
To divide we convert the divisor into its reciprocal and change the sum into simple sum of multiplication.
Thus all mathematical operators can be performed on a whole number and a fraction.
