# Terminating Decimals

Top
Numbers which contain decimal Point are known as Decimal Numbers. The decimal number system has a base or radix value of 10 which expand from 0 - 9. Decimal numbers has two parts: integer part and fraction part separated by a Point known as decimal separator or Period. Decimals are a point which marks the difference between the whole part and the decimal part in a decimal number. It separates the two components of the decimal number.

The terminating Decimals are decimal number whose fractional part or the number on the right side of the decimal separator are finite. So terminating decimal number is a number whose fractional part ends after the certain value it does not go on.

Examples:

$\frac{1}{2}$ = 0.5

$\frac{3}{4}$ = 0.75

$\frac{7}{5}$ = 1.4

$\frac{25}{16}$ = 1.5625

So we have seen decimals whose values after the decimal point got terminated or end and they are terminating decimal. But there can be situation when a value after the decimal point does not end and it keep on going then such decimals are non – terminating decimal or repeating decimals. In this kind of decimal numbers a fraction gives decimal number whose value after the decimal point keep on going or it have a infinite value. Every terminating decimals or non terminating decimal are Rational Numbers and every rational number is either a terminating decimal or a repeating decimal number.
