TopStem and leaf plots is a statistical approach managing the large number of values in a Set. The reason behind using this approach is to manage data Sets that are huge in number. This method is based on making a table with two columns, one representing means of place value that is the highest and is common for multiple Numbers and the second column representing the leaf through smaller place values. Let us understand how to do Stem and Leaf Plots with hundreds with help of an example.

Suppose we have following data which has to arranged using stem and leaf plot: 120, 130, 470, 180, 160, 240, 200, 220, 250, 260, 270, 320, 290. 280, 140. To make back - to – back stem ad leaf plot we 1st need to rearrange data such that it is present in a particular mathematical order of numbers. Suppose we are arranging the set in ascending order, then it becomes:

120, 130, 140, 160, 180, 200, 220, 240, 250, 260, 270, 280, 290. 320, 470.

Here stem for data set will be the hundredth place value digit i.e. 1, 2, 3 and 4 and corresponding to them leaf values will be written as tens digits. For instance, if we write stem as 1 and leaf as 2 then it means the number 120 and similarly the complete plot is made. So, to start with we 1st make two columns with one column representing the stem values as hundredth place value digit and another for leaf values being represented by the tens place value digits as follows:

Where, 2 in stem and 0 in leaf means 200.
